Carmen K.M. Or 柯嘉敏
A science-trained artist who attempts to present nature and wildlife, particularly birds, in simplicity
Based in Hong Kong, Carmen discovered her passion for drawing at a young age and has pursued Chinese painting since the age of seven. As she grew, she explored various art mediums and gained exposure to Western art during her high school years. Her artistic talent was recognized with several accolades in local and national painting competitions, culminating in the Heep Yunn Old Girls' Association Cup for Achievements in Art upon her graduation.
At 14, Carmen developed a keen interest in wildlife-watching, particularly in birds, which sparked her fascination with local biodiversity. She pursued her academic interests by majoring in Ecology and Biodiversity at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), where she graduated with honors in 2011. Following this, she furthered her studies in marine mammal conservation ecology, earning her Ph.D. in 2017. Her doctoral research focused on the socio-spatial ecology of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins, known locally as Chinese White Dolphins, in Hong Kong and the Pearl River Estuary.
Currently, Carmen works at Mai Po Nature Reserve, a protected area within a Ramsar site recognized as a vital migratory stopover for waterbirds along the East Asia-Australasia Flyway. She is dedicated to local conservation efforts while continuing to nurture her artistic skills in her free time.
